Burlington

Dr. Edward Galusha Dyer was a “double abolitionist.” That is, he not only hid runaways in his home, but he was also a leader in the work against slavery. When Caroline Quarlls and Lyman Goodnow needed money for their journey to Canada, Dr. Dyer collected money from other abolitionists right on the sidewalk in Burlington. He also named the street in front of his house “Liberty Avenue” and was famous for saying, “Can liberty and slavery long dwell together? Which side shall we be on? Surely we will be for liberty.”
